And another thing, I'm freaking sick of people posting videos to [info]scans_daily. I mean, the community was founded for homoerotic crap, then it started to open up to comic art in general, but now it's become this big garbage dump where members just post whatever useless shit they have on hand. CGI pornography? Post it to [info]scans_daily! YouTube video from some cartoon no one cares about? Post it to [info]scans_daily! Amatuer comics done with colored pencil? Post it to [info]scans_daily! Plug for that other stupid-ass community you're in? Post it to [info]scans_daily! Humor-free photomanipulations! Post it to [info]scans_daily!

I swear, every day I become more and more convinced that I need to just make my own LJ community for people to post scans from comic books, just because scans_daily has become such a craphole. Foenix and Timey would be moderators, a notion that makes me think of that scene in Lord of the Rings where the giant dude in the armor's just swinging his stick around batting enemy soldiers into the air like ping pong balls. I don't know what I'd call the community. Probably something like mike_smith_hates_you, or scans_stfu. "Hi, I'm new to mike_smith_hates_you, and I couldn't help but noticing that this comm is sorely lacking in Elfquest love! So I've posted fifty pages of their boring-ass black-and-white bush league artwork, complete with unfunny commentary where I infer gay subtext in every conversation!" Then I'd just delete the entire post. [info]teh_no would be shot on sight.

I should probably calm the hell down.

Everyone goes over the top on rage due to something on the internet. It's part of what makes us human.

Nah. You should just create the community. That's kind of the reason I ignore SD. It is boring. A community that was nothing but comic scans? That would interest me.

... Uh, I'm sorry, I thought we were having a contest. Reveling in fandom hatred is a healthy and normal part of fandom. A clean spleen is a healthy spleen and there have been a lot of garbage posts to that community, lately.

"Mike Smith Hates You began as a hate - i.e. Mike hating you - community. Liking Mike's hate certainly isn't a requirement to membership, but what *is* required is acceptance of it. All sorts of hatred is eagerly welcomed, but we do require that you not make disparaging remarks about the people who brought you this community, unless you're Mike, who hates you."

Jeeze, you make it sound like slashers go to every community and make sure to only post slash. You don't like slash, seriously, don't go to scans_daily. And I seriously don't see that much YouTube.

In other news, I suggest a thunderbolts_daily community. I'd contribute until I broke my mouse finger.

Who knows? *shrug* Honestly, I don't pay that much attention, because if seeing "gaymosexual" stuff every day is that intolerable, it sounds like a personal problem to me.

Jeeze, you make it sound like slashers go to every community and make sure to only post slash.

You're saying this like I think it's a conspiracy against me, and that's not it. What I'm trying to say is that I joined the community because I like seeing random comic book art on my friendslist. 80% of thet time, SD satisfies this, but the rest of the time, I end up with a bunch of bullcrap like the stuff listed above, because the community doesn't share my priorities.

You don't like slash, seriously, don't go to scans_daily.

This isn't about slash. This is about the slash mentality, where everything must be slash, even if it isn't. I could draw a pair of stick figures on a paper towel with rat excrement, and as long as they looked vaguely like they were two men in a sexually suggestive situation, no one on scans_daily would object. After all, I can call it a webcomic, and that's legal, right? Meanwhile, someone's sitting on a run of Neal Adams X-Men comics, and they never think to post scans of it because they're not gay enough, or because it doesn't make any snide remarks about Dan Didio.

Yesterday, someone posted a single panel of Green Arrow thinking to himself that anything long and narrow can be deadly in the hands of an expert. This is the sort of thing I like from SD, because it's funny, subtly homoerotic, and it was drawn well.

And I seriously don't see that much YouTube.

I've seen it about three times. That's three times more than it really should have been permitted on the community, since the community is for comic book art, not clips of TV shows tangentally related to comics.

In summary, Green Arrow = Good. Gaymosexual stuff = Tolerable. Extraneous Bullcrap = Itself.
[info]remix17 on October 14th, 2006 07:27 pm (UTC)
I THINK I understand your intolerance for the rampant slash mentality, but again, that's exactly what the community started out for. To expect it to cater to anything else is unfair. It does post nonslash, of course, but if the amounts aren't enough for you, sorry, but too bad. Even when I was still religiously against homosexual behavior I never got that exasperated--the little blurb TOLD me what the site was founded on, and really, who cares if they make a lot of sexual jokes about two men? It's funny. Men have been allowed to have their "two girls doing it" fantasies for years, and now it's like suddenly slash isn't cool because the fangirls get to join in the fun and ewwwwwww, two men are kissing, blech! It's a little unfair how tolerated lesbians are but male slash is curiously the most attacked.

I, for one, would welcome a non scans_daily comic scans community. Not because I have a wealth of stuff to contribute, but because I actually occasionally buy things based on scans I read off there. I just get tired of having to sift through days and days worth of 'this is so gay!' before something worth-while shows up.
Anti-penetrite![info]teh_no on October 14th, 2006 04:30 am (UTC)
Wouldn't work. Let's say that you start a community where the only guidelines are that you only post scans from comics. Exclusively scans from comics, not scans from comics and other things. I'm assuming you're also allowing commentary on the scans, but I guess that could be out too, since then you get into a gray area where someone could post the lyrics to the Rolling Stones' discography along with scans of, I don't know, New Excalibur or whatever. It'd get messy.

Oh, and the homophobia thing, so people can only post about characters who like vaginas (unless they're women, in which case they can only like phallus. And hermaphrodites are RIGHT OUT).

But an lj-community is pretty much in constant motion. It's constant stimuli from a variety of uncontrolled variables. Poster A thinks scans about Thunderbolts are okay, Poster B thinks scans about New Avengers are okay, and at some point in this vast proliferation something new is bound to be invented that will annoy you. Maybe people will crop images, then arrange them in an order that makes them look like something naughty is happening without actually changing the image itself.

Mission drift sets in. You start off with Thunderbolts_Daily, then people are posting scans of Thunderbolts guest-starring in other comic books, then they're posting the context, and so on. In the long run, the only two options are chaos or an increasingly iron-handed grip on the comm ("NOTHING but Thunderbolts scans, no Fightbolts, scans from the Fabian era only."). And as Star Wars teaches us, the more you tighten your grip, Mike, the more star systems will slip through your fingers.

Plus, you know, only half-a-dozen people want to read Thunderbolts scans, while a whole bunch of people want to read porn. So there's that.

Oh, and the homophobia thing

Uh yeah, the "homophobia thing." Because heaven forbid that someone not like a kind of humor because it's gotten old. No, that couldn't be it. They clearly just hate all gay people.

I think that if Mike posted the rules in a manner that politely said, "Hey, if you want homoerotic subtext, go to S_D; it's just not welcome here because it's not my preference, thankyouverymuch." I like giggling over "teh gay" as much as the next gal does and I do read slash fanfic, but sometimes I don't want to talk about slash in comics, I want to talk seriously about characters and that's why I don't read S_D anymore.

I have full faith that Mike could create and maintain a fun, vibrant community that's all about the love of comics.

Oh, and the homophobia thing, so people can only post about characters who like vaginas (unless they're women, in which case they can only like phallus. And hermaphrodites are RIGHT OUT).

See, here's your problem. You assume because I enjoy Thunderbolts and female nudity that I object to everything else on the community.

You know why you'd be shot on sight? I'll tell you.

1. Your photomanips aren't funny. Usually they're hard to read, too, because you pick the worst possible fonts to rewrite the word balloons. You know how [info]improved_archie only uses one caption entry and ignores the other seven? Go with that philosophy.

2. You post like nine hundred times a week. Lately it's been Superboy stuff, and I hate Superboy. I'm glad he's dead, because now I won't have to track down anymore Superboy comics with two-second Steel cameos. But you keep bringing him back to life, posting all this tired Superboy material from the 90's, which was kind of old the first time I saw it, and adding all the slash-and/or-crack stuff in a feeble attempt to make it fresh again. It's not working.

3. Horribly drawn porn. Naturally, you'd assume that my problem with this is that it's porn, because you'd like to paint me as some sort of prudish, conservative killjoy who opposes everything you stand for. Well, try again, because my problem is that your porn sucks, and not in the good, NSFW way. No, it sucks in the "this looks like a sixteen-year-old kid drew it" way. Again, you already post nine hundred times a week, anyway, so I'm betting if you were confined to once every two days, you'd suddenly get a lot more choosy about what you post. Instead, it's Superboy and crappy porn. Like Hawkeye Pierce in the mess hall, I've had a river of liver and an ocean of fish. We Want Something Else.

4. You don't even notice your own redundancy. Looking back, I count three posts where Superboy mentions probing in some fashion or another. I mean, what's the point in using the same joke three times? The first time it's mildly funny, but after that you're just spamming. Sort of like how you've commented to this post like five times to make the same unrelated point.

Now, notice how slash doesn't have a whole hell of a lot to do with what I'm talking about? I could start a "straight-only" scan community (not that I would want to), and it'd still have you or someone like you dumping a bunch of repetitive, unfunny crap into it, mostly for attention. And then when you'd get called out on it, you'd cry "homophobia" and hope to guilt me into putting up with your nonsense. Cutting that off from the start isn't mission drift, that's moderation, and I wouldn't mind seeing a community that knows the difference.

Maybe you shouldn't read s_d. You don't like the slashy core aspect of it, you don't enjoy the commentary, and every time you have anything to say about it here, it just seems to get you worked up to no satisfactory result. Just doesn't seem like your cuppa. Seriously, do put together your own community. The lack of photomanips and vids would be a plus so far as I'm concerned.

Don't think I won't try to push Elfquest in under the radar, though.

See, this is what I'm saying. You don't have to agree with my tastes to appreciate that SD's a flawed community. I'd gladly tolerate an Elfquest Week if it meant I didn't have to endure "Dan Didio Sucks Year" or "Prove Batman's Gay" Century.

Naw, feel free. Hell, I'd join because I liked S_D for a while, and then I hated it and took it off. Much of the reason I originally joined was so I could keep up with comics while not buying any, or at least know what the salient points were.

If you made a competing S_D, and allowed only a little bit of hormonal sniggering at the subtext, I'd totally join and back you up.

Go for it. I’d gladly join (if you’d have me) simply because I enjoy having as many venues to discuss comics as possible. I suppose that’s the main reason I have difficulty sympathizing with your objections to S_D. It is NOT your only available option when it comes to meeting with other comic fans. Going to S_D for your comic fix is entirely optional, if your objections to the content were that serious you simply wouldn’t go and you’d create your own community or find another. You have many options, scans_daily hardly has a monopoly on the fandom so going there and taking the often condescending tone that you do towards the posters results in me dismissing your complaints as, well, ineffectual whining more often than not. Whining that is similar in some ways to the mewling and bitching towards Dido that you seem to detest. It is very easy to complain (often fun too) but it’s much more admirable to take a pro-active approach, such as you are musing about in your post.

I hope that didn’t come off as too bitchy, I can appreciate that you’re not fond of the environment of scans_daily, even if I think in some ways you’re causing yourself some undue frustration. I love to talk about comics, especially with people such as yourself who feel so passionately and are knowledgeable about them (I admit to still being very much a n00b) and it’s not my intention to offend, just to give my own (admittedly unsolicited) opinion in a straightforward manner.
